Trans and non-binary youth are increasingly revealing and expressing their gender identity and often doing so even before puberty. A growing number of these youth will transition while attending school. Québec’s laws were amended in June 2016 to protect and respect the rights of all trans and non-binary people including youth. In this workshop, the realities of trans and non-binary students will be explored, and concrete measures suggested to better support them. The workshop will cover the following subjects:
  • Sexual and gender diversity: what are we talking about? Key concepts (homophobia, transphobia, heteronormativity, gender identity, transition, etc.)
  • Integration of trans and non-binary identities
  • The experience of trans and non-binary youth in Québec Schools
  • Québec laws regarding gender identity and expression
  • Obstacles and challenges on the terrain: strategies to support LGBT youth.
  • Working proactively: how to limit harassment and bullying related to sexual and gender diversity and how to intervene when it does occur?
